The South Sea pearl is currently being cultured in a variety of areas throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans, primarily in the Philippines, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Australia. The South Sea pearl is considered to be one of the biggest commercially harvested cultured pearls in the entire world.

The common size for the South Sea pearl is a whopping 13mm, with the majority of harvests producing sizes that range from 9 mm to 20mm. The South Seas lie between the southern coast of China and the northern coast of Australia. These particular waters are the native habitat of a big oyster which is often referred to as the Pinctada maxima. This extremely large oyster can grow up to a total of 12 inches in diameter and nucleated with a much bigger bead than other similar saltwater oysters including the akoya.

There are typically two types of the Pinctada maxima which include the gold lipped and the silver lipped. The two types are distinguished the coloration which can be found on the outer edge of their interior.

This particular South Sea pearl is also known as the mother-of-pearl which is the reason behind the coloration of the cultured pearls produced. Unlike many of the akoya oysters, the South Sea oyster will only allow one nucleation to take place at a time.

The oyster will be nucleated when it is only about half developed ranginf from 4.7 inches to a total of 6.7 inches in size or approximately 24 months of age. Even though it only allows one nucleation at a time it can be nucleated up to as many as 3 times over the course of several years.

There are normally 4 reasons why the South Sea pearl grows into such a large size. The first reason is due to the large size of the Pinctada maxima which creates the pearl. The second reason is due to the size of the implanted bead. The third reason is because of the amount of time that the pearl is left to grow inside of the oyster.

The fourth and last reason is because of the actual environment that the oyster lives in. The gonads on the oyster is much larger than the akoya which allows it to nacre around the nucleus at a much faster rate especially when in warm water which helps to speed up the metabolism on the oyster.

The South Sea pearl is unique due to the many characteristics that it possess including its size, satiny luster, and the beautiful colors which include silver, golden and white.

freshwater pearl and mollusc Freshwater Pearls are found or cultured in mussels or oysters in rivers, lakes or ponds and tend to be more irregular in shape and more varied in color than saltwater pearls.

Nearly 96% of freshwater pearls today are produced in China, With the development of culturing technique, Chinese freshwater pearls has played an much more important role in the jewelry industry than ever before.

Freshwater pearls’ lower price than saltwater doesn’t necessarily mean low quality. In fact, some high quality freshwater pearls are very valuable. Currently the typical sizes range from 4 mm to over 10 mm.

Those various shapes of pearls can be used to make impressive looking jewelry pieces that sell for moderate prices.

The grading of freshwater pearls is more variable than that of saltwater pearls because freshwater pearls are more colorful and of various shapes. But we can still generally assess their value according to the 7 factors:
tips Luster and Nacre
When cultivating freshwater pearls, it is not need to insert a shell bead. All that is needed is the insertion of a piece of mantle. After the first harvest, mussels can spontaneously grow pearls a second time. That means cultured freshwater pearls either do not have nucleus or have a very little one inside, hence, freshwater pearls are make up with very thick nacre.

Only those freshwater pearls with EVENLY high luster can be considered as high valued ones. Judge luster see Luster and Nacre
tips Surface Quality
Blemishes such as discolorations, pits, bump, wrinkle and cavities can decrease the value of pearls.
tipsColor
Freshwater pearls come in a wide variety of body colors: white, pink, orange, yellow, lavender, gray…

When determining what color to buy, keep these in mind:
The color doesn’t affect the price of freshwater pearls as much as it does that of saltwater pearls.
Pink or silver overtone can increase the freshwater pearl value.
Iridescence increases the value too.
Natural color pearls are more valued than treated ones.
tipsShape
By inserting different shapes of nuclei, people can harvest some unique shapes freshwater pearls as they desiring. Thin shapes freshwater pearls tend to sell for less than fatter-looking ones. Symmetry and round are of higher value than baroque.
tipsSize
Size for freshwater is not as important of a price factor as is luster and surface quality. But it still sticks with the rule of the larger, the more valuable.
tipsTreated Freshwater Pearl
People often treat freshwater pearls to get colorful pearls in various shapes. Treated freshwater pearls bring fashion industry more inspiration and possibility of creating shining pieces. The most often used treatments are bleaching, dyeing, or irradiation. Those big size cultured freshwater pearls mixed with small size ones create a changeful world of pearl jewelry.

The Japanese word Handama means “spherical flower” and describes the most perfect of Akoya pearls which are only of the highest possible value from any harvest of pearls in the region. These pearls are so sought after that prior to auction they are classed differently and set aside in their own lots. This grading of Akoya pearls is respected by the industry despite there not being a standardized grading currently in place to be used. These pearls’ name was coined by the founder of the Akoya pearl industry. Though not officially recognized the term Handama is still used.
These Hanadama pearls are pure and thusly considered the best. There are a few things one must keep in mind when discussing this brand of Akoya pearl and the first is that Hanadama is the highest quality of Akoya pearl that can be found so if you are ever purchasing pearls and the vendor tries to sell you Akoya pearls in a strand as better than Hanadama then either the seller does not get the quality assessed to these pearls or is trying to swindle you out of your hard earned money. The second is the same as the first – the superiority of the Hanadama Akoya pearl cannot be trumped.
In order to achieve this type of standard the pearls must be subjected to several main criteria for grading of the overall quality:
-    The depth of the nacre must be less than .40 mm on any pearl that is chosen to be testes.
-    The luster of the pearl, otherwise known as the teri-value, has to be very strong.
-    There cannot be anything more than very slight, subtle imperfections.
Many will notice that certificates of grading for the Hanadama pearls allow a nacre side to be twice as thick and one must keep it in mind that the depth is tested on a series of random pearls from a string and is by no means indicative of the string as a whole. Any given pearl in a string can be vary slightly from one to another and every Handama string can have pearls anywhere from .40 mm to 1.00 mm in nacre depth or more than that. Consistently guaranteeing nacre depth throughout a strand is impossible.
It is very true that each and every pearl is unique and that is their inherent beauty. The Hanadama Pearl Certificate does not allow for zero grading for imperfections because, and this is very simple, all pearls are imperfect to some degree. Pearls, after all, are organically grown gems made from sand. Though an imperfection in a pearl may go completely unnoticed to a consumer they do exist. It is for this reason that the Pearl Science Laboratory of Japan does not allow for ‘perfectly flawless’ in the grading of pearls.
Whether you are shopping for your wife or girlfriend or simply as an investment you cannot go wrong with the decision to purchase Akoya pearls – especially those with the Hanadama certificate because they represent perfection and you can never go wrong with perfection – or, at the very least, an incredibly close facsimile.
